Active Fire Operational Manager
Working Hours: Mon – Fri, 8am – 5pm

Scope
Highly organised and technically proficient professional responsible for overseeing the delivery, maintenance, and compliance of active fire protection systems, including AOVs, fire alarms, smoke control systems, and fire curtains. Leads multidisciplinary teams and subcontractors to ensure efficient operations, high-quality service, and full compliance with British Standards and legislation. Ensures technical excellence through audits and regulatory collaboration, while driving team development, stakeholder engagement, and client satisfaction. Supports commercial growth through project planning, cost control, and strategic input.
Knowledge & Experience
Minimum qualifications & experience for this role are:
Essential
1. Proven experience (5+ years) in managing active fire protection systems. (E)
2. Level 3 or higher qualification in Fire Safety Engineering (e.g., NVQ, BTEC, HNC/HND).(E)
3. Industry-recognised certifications such as FIA (Fire Industry Association) modules (e.g., Design, Installation, Maintenance of Fire Detection & Alarm Systems).
4. CSCS/SSSTS/SMSTS for site safety management (E)
5. Strong knowledge of fire safety standards and building regulations. (E)
6. Experience with AOVs, fire alarms, fire curtains, smoke control systems, and any associated systems. (E)
Desirable
1. Project management certification (e.g., PRINCE2, APM) is desirable. (D)
2. IOSH or NEBOSH Health & Safety qualification (D)
Skills
Strong communicator with proven ability to build and motivate teams, foster stakeholder relationships, analyse and report information effectively, maintain accurate records, and deliver results through excellent planning, organisation, and digital proficiency.
OTHER
1. The ability to travel to a range of sites.
2. Appreciation that there might be out of hours working, agreed in advance.
Duties
Operational Oversight
* Manage compliance in day-to-day operations for design, installation, servicing, and maintenance of fire and security systems.
* Develop and implement process and procedures aligned with Building Regulations, BSA, BSR and CDM requirements and embed in workflows, company IMS and delivery
* Develop and implement record retaining infrastructure including, design documentation, as built information, commissioning records and training records ensuring records are accessible and readily retrievable.
* Collaborate with Operational leads to ensure best practice and SSOW, training and information sharing is controlled and reaching target audience
* Co-ordinate, participate and undertake training designed to keep work force competency current and up to date with regulation, BS and industry standards.
* Manage and co-ordinate CPD to ensure workforce competencies are continually developing forging pathways to facilitate continued growth.
Compliance & Quality Assurance
* Ensure adherence to BS 5839, BS 9999, EN 12101, BS EN 50132 (CCTV), BS EN 50131 (Intruder), and Building Safety Act requirements.
* Conduct audits and inspections; liaise with third-party inspectors and fire authorities.
* Facilitate internal and external audits (BAFE, NSI, IFC, ISO9001).
* Retention, maintenance, and management of third-party certifications (BAFE, NSI, IFC, ISO).
* Secure additional third-party certifications to cover the full range of services within the sub-department.
* Manage building control and planning permission processes for fire and security installations.
* Prepare and submit BSA Gateway documentation for high-risk residential buildings.
* Ensure full fire safety compliance across all projects and operations.
* Co-ordinate workforce attendance and punctuality
* Colloborate with group compliance team creating a one voice message across the organisation.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
* HR: Verify training records and development plans align with BSA and PAS guidance; ensure
staff competency and professional progression is demonstrable.
* QSHE: Ensure processes and procedures are documented, ISO-compliant, and reflective of
real-life scenarios; confirm SSOW are in place, suitably recorded and implemented across all
work-streams.
* ESG: Drive compliance with broader legislation, carbon reduction initiatives, and social value
programmes.
* Environmental: Oversee fleet management for maximum efficiency; monitor, measure, and
correct driving behaviours to reduce environmental impact.
Project Management
- Lead multiple projects from initiation to completion, ensuring delivery on time and within budget.
- Prepare compliance documentation, SSOW, commissioning reports, and Gateway submissions.
Team Leadership
- Manage and develop a team of managers, supervisors, and admins.
- Maintain training matrices and competency frameworks for QSHE and building safety compliance.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Act as primary contact for clients and internal teams on operational and compliance matters.
- Collaborate with Principal Designers, Contractors, and Building Safety Regulator.
