Vision for Education are recruiting a Behaviour Support Assistant to work within a specialist Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) in Newport, starting September.
This is an excellent opportunity for individuals with experience supporting children or adults with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs or Social, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties (SEBD). We welcome applicants from education, care, youth work, sports coaching, residential support and other people-focused backgrounds.
The school supports pupils who require additional behavioural and emotional support to achieve their full potential. Many of these young people have experienced challenging circumstances, and school provides a safe, structured environment where positive relationships can have a lasting impact.
As a Behaviour Support Assistant, you will act as a positive role model, building trusted relationships with pupils and helping them regulate their emotions, engage with learning and develop confidence both inside and outside the classroom.
You will play a key role in recognising early signs of dysregulation, using de-escalation strategies and positive behaviour management techniques to support pupils before situations escalate. Staff are encouraged to take a calm, restorative approach, helping pupils re-engage with learning in a safe and supportive way.
A Team Teach qualification (or similar positive behaviour management training) would be advantageous but is not essential, as full training can be provided.
The Role
Supporting primary and secondary-aged pupils with SEMH and behavioural needs
Working with pupils on both a 1:1 basis and in small groups
Building positive, trusting and professional relationships
Supporting pupils through challenging situations with patience and resilience
Working alongside teachers and wider support staff to meet individual learning and behavioural needs
Encouraging positive engagement, participation and independence
Using de-escalation techniques and positive behaviour strategies to support learning
Helping to create a safe, inclusive and nurturing learning environment
