Caretaker
Location: Rotherham
Contract Type: Temporary, 3 months
Rate: £16.91 per hour via umbrella
Requirements: Full UK driving licence, Enhanced DBS
About the Caretaker Role:
We are looking for a reliable and proactive Caretaker to provide mobile support across local schools. This role involves general site management, planned and reactive maintenance, porterage, security, and acting as a key link between the school and support services.
Key Responsibilities of the Caretaker:
• Carry out general site management including litter picking, planned and reactive building maintenance, porterage, security, and reception duties.
• Log all maintenance and cleaning tasks, proactively identifying and completing minor repairs where appropriate, and requesting assistance for tasks outside your skillset. Respond to school requests in a timely manner.
• Complete planned maintenance tasks such as emergency light testing, fire alarm testing, and water hygiene activities.
• Unlock and lock school buildings, ensuring security at all times, including security patrols and checking doors and gates are locked.
• Maintain the school visitor book, including signing in contractors.
• Manage external contractors on site following company and health & safety guidelines, providing site inductions and escorting visitors where required.
• Ensure all equipment used is in good repair and operated according to manufacturer’s instructions.
• Clean hall floors daily during term time using provided equipment.
• Keep external areas free from litter and leaves, empty external bins, secure large waste bins, and facilitate access for waste collection visits.
• Attend to reactive cleaning tasks, replenishing hand soap, towels, and toilet tissue as needed.
• Proactively ensure safe access around schools during icy or snowy conditions, following site plans for clearing and gritting paths.
Skills & Experience Required:
• Previous experience in a caretaker, facilities, or maintenance role
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks across sites
• Strong understanding of health & safety requirements and procedures
• Good problem-solving skills and attention to detail
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Reliable, punctual, and proactive
