CNC Milling Programmer / Setter / Operator

Overview

An established precision engineering manufacturer is seeking an experienced CNC Milling Programmer / Setter / Operator to join its machining team on a permanent day-shift basis. This role is ideal for a skilled CNC machinist with extensive experience programming, setting, and operating 3-axis and 4-axis vertical machining centres using Heidenhain control systems.

The successful candidate will be responsible for producing high-precision components to exacting quality standards, including machining challenging and exotic materials such as Inconel, Nitronic, stainless steels, and other high-performance alloys.

Key Responsibilities

* Program new CNC milling jobs directly at the machine using Heidenhain controls.

* Set and operate CNC vertical milling machines.

* Load, prove out, edit, and optimise CNC programs.

* Set up and align fixtures, vices, tooling, and workholding equipment.

* Machine components from a range of materials, including high-specification and difficult-to-machine alloys.

* Interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, and process documentation.

* Select appropriate tooling, cutting parameters, and machining strategies.

* Conduct first-off inspections and in-process quality checks.

* Maintain tight tolerances and high-quality surface finishes.

* Troubleshoot and resolve machining, tooling, and process-related issues.

* Maintain a safe, clean, and organised working environment.

* Adhere to all health, safety, quality, and operational procedures.

Skills and Experience Required

* Proven experience as a CNC Milling Programmer / Setter / Operator.

* Strong knowledge and practical experience of Heidenhain CNC control systems.

* Experience operating CNC vertical machining centres.

* Ability to program directly at the machine.

* Experience machining exotic or difficult-to-machine materials, including Inconel, Nitronic, or similar alloys.

* Strong understanding of fixture setup, tooling selection, and work offset management.

* Knowledge of cutting tool technology and advanced machining techniques.

* Ability to work accurately to tight tolerances and quality standards.

* High level of attention to detail and problem-solving ability.

* Self-motivated and capable of working independently or within a team environment.

Desirable Experience

* Experience within one-off, prototype, or small-batch manufacturing environments.

* Background in high-precision sectors such as aerospace, medical, motorsport, defence, energy, or oil and gas.

* Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement practices.
