About the role
We are seeking an experienced Deputy Head of Building Control (Class 3 Specialist) to support a senior leadership team within a dynamic Planning & Building Control service.
This role sits at the centre of building safety, regulatory compliance, and high-risk construction oversight. You will help lead a professional Building Control team, manage complex developments, and ensure compliance with national building safety legislation.
You will also work closely with the Head of Building Control and act as a key liaison with the Building Safety Regulator (BSR).
Key responsibilities
* Lead and support a team of Building Control inspectors, including mentoring and workload management
* Assess and determine complex Building Control applications, including high-risk “in scope” buildings
* Carry out plan checking, site inspections, and enforcement activity
* Ensure compliance with the Building Act 1984, Building Regulations 2010, and Building Safety Act 2022
* Manage dangerous structures response and participate in an out-of-hours emergency rota
* Deputise for the Head of Building Control when required
* Act as expert witness in legal proceedings where necessary
* Engage with developers, contractors, residents, and external agencies to ensure safe development
* Support performance reporting, service improvement, and regulatory engagement with the BSR
About you
* Chartered member of a relevant professional body (e.g. RICS, CABE, CIOB or equivalent)
* Registered Building Inspector (Class 3 – BICoF framework)
* Significant experience in Building Control, including complex and high-risk projects
* Experience managing or supervising technical teams
* Strong knowledge of UK Building Regulations and associated legislation
* Confident communicator with strong stakeholder engagement skills
* Able to make sound, risk-based technical decisions under pressure
