Housing Advisor (SO2) – Housing Needs
Location: South London (Lambeth area)
Rate: £23.51 per hour PAYE
Hours: 35 hours per week
Working Pattern: 3 days office-based / 2 days remote
Start Date: 7 April 2026
We are currently recruiting for 6 experienced Housing Advisors to join a busy Housing Needs service in South London on a temporary basis.
This is an excellent opportunity for skilled housing professionals with strong knowledge of homelessness legislation and prevention work to make a real impact in supporting vulnerable residents and preventing homelessness.
The Role
You will be responsible for delivering a customer-focused housing advice and homelessness prevention service in line with the Homelessness Reduction Act, relevant housing legislation, statutory guidance, case law and best practice.
The role will involve managing a varied and often complex caseload, working with households at risk of homelessness, conducting housing needs assessments, creating personalised housing plans and identifying all available housing options to prevent or relieve homelessness.
Key Responsibilities
* Undertake housing needs assessments and develop personalised housing plans
* Prevent homelessness through advice, advocacy, negotiation, mediation and casework
* Manage a complex caseload in a fast-paced and demanding environment
* Carry out homelessness assessments under Part VII of the Housing Act 1996
* Provide front-line housing advice through drop-ins, appointments and telephone services
* Assess temporary accommodation needs and follow placement processes
* Support customers to access alternative housing options, including private rented accommodation
* Work with households affected by welfare reform to prevent homelessness
* Liaise with landlords, families, support agencies and internal teams to achieve sustainable housing outcomes
* Maintain accurate case records and meet service performance targets
* Assess support needs and refer clients into relevant housing-related support services
To be considered, you must have:
* Previous experience in a Housing Advisor, Homelessness Prevention, Housing Needs or Housing Options role
* Strong working knowledge of the Homelessness Reduction Act and Part VII of the Housing Act 1996
* Experience managing complex housing casework in a local authority or similar setting
* Excellent customer service, communication and negotiation skills
* The ability to work effectively with vulnerable and sometimes challenging clients
* Strong case recording and administrative skills
