Mechanical Fitter

Working Hours & Pay

* Hours: 37.5 hours per week

* Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM – 3:30 PM

* Hourly Rate: £17.50ph - £34,125 per annum

Purpose of the Role

Responsible for assembling, installing, maintaining, and repairing heavy mechanical equipment and machinery to ensure optimal performance, safety, and reliability within operations.

Key Responsibilities

* Assemble, install, and align heavy mechanical components and machinery in line with engineering drawings and specifications.

* Carry out routine and preventative maintenance on plant equipment and production machinery.

* Diagnose mechanical faults and perform effective repairs to minimise downtime.

* Dismantle and reassemble equipment such as pumps, motors, gearboxes, conveyors, compressors, and hydraulic systems.

* Accurately interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and schematics.

* Use precision measuring instruments (e.g., micrometers, dial indicators, calipers).

* Conduct equipment inspections and complete maintenance reports.

* Ensure full compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations.

* Collaborate with electricians, engineers, and maintenance staff.

* Support shutdowns, breakdown responses, and emergency repairs when required.

Health & Safety Responsibilities

* Work safely at all times to protect yourself and others, reporting hazards and near misses.

* Handle and move materials using appropriate mechanical lifting methods.

* Use and maintain appropriate PPE, replacing when necessary.

* Adhere strictly to the company’s Health & Safety Policy.

Knowledge & Skills Required

* Proven experience as a Mechanical Fitter within a heavy engineering or manufacturing environment.

* Relevant trade qualification (e.g., Mechanical Fitting, Fitting & Turning, or equivalent).

* Strong knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems.

* Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical manuals.

* Experience working with heavy rotating equipment.

* Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills.

* Solid understanding of workplace health and safety practices.

* Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

* Experience in heavy plant maintenance or industrial machinery
