Substation Inspector
Reporting to the Site Supervisor, you'll be a permanent member of the UKPN Services directorate. You'll work as part of a team or as a lone worker, carrying out the full range of tasks associated with substation inspections and vegetation management at substation voltages up to 33kV. You will play an important role in the safe completion of the Inspection & Maintenance Programme for the Services region, and you may work at any location within the Services area. This is a site-based role and does not offer blended working.
You will attract a salary of £38,832 and a bonus of 3%. Benefits include 25 days' annual leave plus bank holidays, reservist leave (an additional 18 days' full pay and 22 unpaid), a personal pension plan (you contribute 4% or 5% and UK Power Networks contributes 8% or 10) amongst other benefits.
You'll build your experience in inspection, non-intrusive diagnostic testing and practical upkeep of substation environments, with company-specific training provided. You'll help embed a strong safety culture through the UKPNS Stay Safe programme and contribute to compliant, well-maintained sites that support customers and communities.
In this role you will carry out inspection and non-intrusive diagnostic testing of all plant and apparatus associated with the HV and LV distribution network, locate faults and repair minor plant defects, take oil samples when required for diagnostic testing from HV plant, use hand-held IT equipment to capture and input data, and oversee maintenance, project and sub-contract staff within your working party. You will assist the team with other maintenance and project-based work and be prepared to support other sections during organisational changes or system emergencies, as determined by your experience. You will also complete cleaning of all substation internals, including plant and apparatus under UKPN Services' guardianship, with cleaning activities including dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping and cleaning internal windows. You will complete additional site visits to meet ESQC Regulations requirements, undertake HV and LV meter reading, manage substation external compound vegetation pruning or removal by manual, mechanical or chemical control, and undertake touch-up re-decoration tasks within substations.
If you have a basic electrical background, can work flexibly alone or as part of a team, hold a clean driving licence, can obtain security clearance for client infrastructure access (including a 5-year traceable work history), understand health, safety and environmental legislation, can confidently input data on hand-held devices, and have knowledge of chemicals and other supplies (including familiarity with material safety data sheets and sharps management), we'd like to hear from you.
