Supply Heroes are working in partnership with a welcoming and inclusive primary school in Sutton Coldfield that is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Year 1 SEND Teaching Assistant to join their team. This is a rewarding opportunity to support a young pupil with a visual impairment, helping them access learning and develop independence within a supportive classroom environment.

The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the pupil’s educational journey by adapting learning activities, using specialist resources, and working closely with teaching staff and external professionals. The role requires patience, strong communication skills, and a proactive approach to ensuring the pupil’s safety, wellbeing, and academic progress.

About the Role

* Provide dedicated 1:1 support to a Year 1 pupil with a visual impairment

* Support the pupil to access learning through adapted and accessible activities

* Use tactile resources and specialist equipment to support engagement and understanding

* Promote the pupil’s independence while ensuring their safety within the classroom and around the school

* Anticipate and manage potential risks when the pupil is moving independently

* Work closely with the class teacher and specialist professionals to deliver tailored support

* Provide regular feedback to the class teacher on the pupil’s progress and wellbeing

* Support the creation of an inclusive and positive learning environment

* Participate in training and professional development, including opportunities to learn Braille and use specialist equipment

The Right Candidate

Essential:

* Experience working with a young person with visual impairment

* Experience using tactile resources to support learning

* Experience tailoring learning activities to ensure they are accessible

* Ability to anticipate and mitigate risk for a pupil moving around independently

* Ability to work effectively with specialist professionals

* Strong teamwork skills and ability to provide feedback to the class teacher

* Willingness to develop new skills, including learning Braille

* Ability to use, or willingness to learn to use, specialist equipment (e.g., visualiser)

* Good judgement in knowing when to step in to support and when to encourage independence

Desirable:

* Knowledge of Braille

* Knowledge of the Key Stage 1 (KS1) curriculum
