Site Security Opening and locking the school buildings each day Setting and unsetting alarms Monitoring CCTV systems Acting as a key holder (may include call-outs outside school hours) Maintenance & Repairs Carrying out minor repairs (e.g., fixing doors, locks, furniture, plumbing issues) Basic DIY, painting and decorating Checking lighting, heating, and water systems Liaising with external contractors for larger repairs In many London borough schools, caretakers report to the Site Manager or Premises Manager. Health & Safety Conducting regular site inspections Ensuring fire exits are clear and equipment is functional Managing risk assessments Gritting pathways in winter Ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations Schools follow guidance from bodies such as the Health and Safety Executive. Cleaning & Grounds Overseeing cleaning staff (in some schools) Ensuring classrooms and communal areas are ready for use Managing waste disposal Basic grounds maintenance (playgrounds, sports areas) 5. Supporting School Operations Setting up halls for exams, assemblies, or parents’ evenings Moving furniture and equipment Receiving deliveries Assisting during events In many London schools, exam setup must follow rules set by Joint Council for Qualifications. Working Hours Often split shifts (early morning and late afternoon/evening) May include occasional weekend work Overtime possible Term-time only or full-year contracts depending on the school Skills & Qualities Needed Practical maintenance skills Knowledge of health & safety regulations Good communication skills Reliability and trustworthiness Ability to work independently Basic IT skills (for logging maintenance issues) Enhanced DBS check (mandatory for school work) Experience in maintenance, facilities, or caretaking preferred First aid training often desirable
